Don’t Forget Corrective Exercises!!

Most patients come into our office seeking treatment to help with their pain and decreased mobility. Our primary treatment, Active Release Technique (ART), along with other tool assisted methods, can work wonders for many conditions, however it is just part of the over-all treatment process. Using the right treatment method at the right time determines the speed and accuracy of a proper recovery. Corrective exercises are an important, often overlooked, part of the rehab process. These exercises are given to patients, not just as a suggestion, but as an effective way to help improve their condition when they are outside of our office.


I have had many patients assume that once their pain has decreased and their range of motion has improved that there is no need to continue the corrective exercises. While these are great signs that your condition is improving, it is important to continue the exercises to create symmetry within the injured area and help prevent additional re-injury. Some examples include stretching, passive or active ROM, exercises with or without weights, or conditioning drills.

The main goal of the corrective exercises is to restore balance in the body –something that many people and athletes in particular are lacking. For example, golfers, tennis and baseball players consistently use one side of their body more than the other to swing, hit or throw, which can lead to an imbalance. Many crossfitters also suffer from muscle imbalance. As they train in higher intensity, the stronger muscles begin to compensate for weaker muscles, which can lead to improper technique and imbalance. This is how our body tries to be more efficient by using stronger muscles more and weaker muscles less. Having individual accessory and corrective work designed for your asymmetries is key for safety and balance in any work-out program.

4-SquatsCorrective exercises are important not only for recovery but for improved function and performance. In almost any sport there must be some corrective work done to correct asymmetries that develop on the court. Pro athletes don’t just play their sport all day long. They put great effort into doing corrective exercises to minimize imbalance in their body. Otherwise, injuries will take over most of their career. While we can teach you the initial corrective exercise in the office, it will take many more repetitions outside of the office to make a larger change in your body. Repeating the exercises at home, at work or the gym allows your body to be accustomed to the movement so that it becomes second nature.

Each person has their own unique imbalances, which is why we tailor corrective exercise programs for each person. Our goal at Active Care Atlanta is for all of our patients to continue doing what they love and performing and competing at the highest possible level.
